Keeping Warm Around The World

When we think of a holiday we think of sun, sea and sand; but some of the most magical places have some of the world’s most extreme weather conditions. As many people find the months of December, January and February relatively cold, thoughts turn to hot chocolate and roaring fires. Throughout the world there are many ways people stay warm and this post will explore some of the most common and bizarre!

The UK

According to a survey by Regatta, people in the UK take to walking and hiking to keep the body active in the winter months. Staying active is a great way to keep warm during this time, but if you just want to relax with a good movie, most people in the UK opt for simply layering up – traditional but effective and also good for the environment.

One tip that is useful for the winter is to ensure a consistent temperature within your home to ensure you don’t catch a cold due to varying temperatures. This may seem like a fairly obvious way to not catch a chill, so if you’re looking to try something new, here are some ideas for you.

Canada

Apparently, Canadians stay warm by speeding up their metabolism by having a large breakfast. They have also been known to eat more whenever they begin to feel ill. This is perhaps a strategy for staying warm we can all get behind – thank you Canada!

Russia

If you don’t fancy over-eating then you can try the Russian way, a banya! A banya is a Russian bathhouse that is often compared to a spa. In Russia you will find that people spend hours in the banya.

The main difference between a Finnish sauna and a banya is the type of steam, with banya’s having wet steam and sauna’s dry.

Iceland

Iceland gets seriously cold with temperatures being known to drop below -10°C, so they have come up with a genius way to stay warm. Using the Earth’s internal heat, they produce geothermal energy which provides electricity to many building’s in Iceland, as well as heating up public footpaths and car parks for easy travelling.

There you have it, a few effective and somewhat unusual ways of staying warm in the winter. If you have come across any fascinating ways to stay warm on your travels, let us know using #AFrostyDebate.
